West to East in Harmony – Charity Concert

West to East in Harmony 26.2.13

A Charity Concert ‘West to East in Harmony’

Touching and magnificent

Seraphim Music Orchestra’s early concert in 2013 is an opportunity to admire the works of Edith Claudia Atmadja, the music director as well as teacher in Seraphim Music Studio who was able to combine the eastern and western music blended into beautiful harmony.

The Tuesday night concert at Grand Ballroom, Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya also shows the exceptional skill of Guests Stars and Musicians from Seraphim Music Studio.

The program opened with Swan Lake Op.20 by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and followed by haunted and mysterious composition by Camile Saint-Saens, Dance Macabre which is known as Dance of Death, played by sisters Shelley and Rachelle Alfina Sutanto.

Meeryung P.Hall, Korean Vocalist continued the show with The Lord’s Prayer accompanied by two blind pianists, Eliezer and Ardi. Guest tenors, Rubin Lukito and Mr. Tan Siek Miaw joined the performance with glorious and passionate work by Agustin Lara, Granada.

The young pianist, Liny Angeline Basuki performed Warsaw Concerto, written for 1941 British film Dangerous Moonlight and followed by Academy Awards Winner Movie Soundtrack, Pirates of the Carribbean performed by Glory H.Surya, Agatha S. Jayawardhani, Dionisius Pangkey, and Ajie A. Basuki.

Touching performance by Children of light, a group of blind musicians, gave a different atmosphere and showed their love and passion in reciting poems, playing music in ensemble and singing in the choir. The journey started to shift from West to East when Vanessa, Jennifer, Trista, Abbysa, Valerie, and Bunga presented Chinese Dragon, a joyful and attractive oriental piece for piano and orchestra, orchestration by Edith Atmadja. Ang Swie Tjhay and Russy Sutanto completed the Eastern journey with two Chinese folk songs, Gu Yi Qing Shen Ke Jia Qin, and Fu Lao Xiang Qin.

Closing out the night was Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1 in E flat Major by Franz Liszt which was brilliantly performed by the talented young pianist, Sebastian Wilbert Basuki that spontaneously attracted thunderous applause from approximately 1000 audience who watched the performance. Farandole from L’Arlesienne no. 2 created a sweet finish for the long journey of West to East in Harmony Concert.

Apart from the entire musicians that performed on that night, the principal conductor Kevin Georgius Atmadja deserved all credits. Despite the vast array in musical genre and technical difficulties of the programs, Kevin was able to bring the unique characteristic from each piece, showing great capabilities as an aspiring young conductor.
